Standing United Against Far-Right Extremism: A Call for Community Solidarity.
Public Statement from The North Staffordshire Postal Branch of the Communication Workers Union

August 8, 2024

As a united and diverse community, we at the North Staffordshire Postal Branch of the Communication Workers Union stand firmly against the rising tide of far-right extremism that is currently seeking to divide us. The recent calls for protests by individuals like Tommy Robinson, in the wake of the Southport stabbing, are deeply concerning. These actions are not only misguided but dangerous, attempting to exploit a tragedy that has nothing to do with Islam or the local Muslim community.

The family of the victim themselves have asked for deeper community cohesion, a call we wholeheartedly echo. In a time of grief and pain, the last thing our community needs is hatred and division. The far-right’s attempts to sow fear, panic, and discord among us will be futile, as we choose to stand stronger together, more united than ever.

Our branch proudly represents members of all faiths, backgrounds, and walks of life. We are committed to fostering an environment of solidarity, where every individual—regardless of race, religion, or creed—feels safe and valued. We stand in firm support of all faith groups in our community, and we especially stand with genuine refugees who have come to our shores seeking refuge from persecution. They deserve our compassion, not our scorn.

Let us not forget our proud history as a nation that stood resolute against the forces of fascism during some of the darkest times in modern history. Our ancestors fought and sacrificed to protect the values of freedom, equality, and justice that we hold dear today. We must honour their legacy by continuing to defend these values against any who would seek to undermine them.

The North Staffordshire Postal Branch will always oppose hatred in all its forms. We urge our community to reject the divisive rhetoric of the far-right and to stand together in unity, peace, and mutual respect. Together, we will ensure that our shared values of solidarity and inclusivity prevail.

In solidarity,

Asim Masood
